Michael Vatikiotis has worked for the Bangkok Post and for the BBC World Service, and was the Managing Editor and Editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review.

Now a private diplomat and armed conflict negotiator, Michael works with the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue as their Asia Regional Director.

He has written numerous articles for books and journals and his own books include Indonesian Politics under Suharto, Political Change in Southeast Asia: Trimming the Banyan Tree, Debatable Land: Stories from Southeast Asia, The Spice Garden  and most recently The Painter of Lost Souls.

Michael has a PhD from Oxford University and in 2005 was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Maryland.

Blood and Silk: Power and Conflict in Modern Southeast Asia was published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 2017; his next book, Lives Between the Lines: A Journey in Search of a Lost Levant will be published in 2021, also by Weidenfeld & Nicolson.
